design trend: emerald

If you’ve been following “Through the Front Door” for awhile now, you probably have gotten a sense of my style.  For those of you that are new around these parts, generally, I tend to favor softer colors (in addition to black and white), and I stay away from really bright, bold, rich hues.

Well, as you may know, Pantone’s color of the year for 2013 is Emerald.  On the runways, I’m obsessed with it.  I mean, look at these stunning dresses by Eli Saab & Anthropologie.  Get in my closet.  Right now.

However, when it comes to home decor, I’m still a little uneasy about this color choice.  Perhaps it’s because the color itself just feels heavy to me, I don’t quite know, but there’s something about this ultra luxurious color that I can’t quite wrap my head around in home design.
While I normally do like the glam-chic style, the emerald walls in the above picture are just a little too over-the-top for my liking.  If you are a fan of these bold statement walls, by all means, don’t let my opinion deter you.  Just because I may not prefer something doesn’t mean it can’t work in your home.
However, if you are like me and prefer a more subtle approach to this color, try using it in accent pieces to add a little burst of color to your rooms.  By introducing this color in small doses through accessories, it is a lot more approachable and a lot less overwhelming.

So, I’m curious: what are your thoughts on this year’s color of the year?  Are you proudly displaying it in your home?  In your closet?  On your walls?  Or are you just dismissing this color altogether?  Leave some love and let me know.  Have a wonderful weekend!
