entry closet remodel

This past Sunday, Noel and I were working on the pantry that we’re building.  Since we had finished hanging all the drywall on Saturday, we were ready to move on to mudding.  I was actually excited for this step, because for whatever reason, I thought I’d be really good at it.

Spolier alert: I wasn’t.

Before we started, we watched a few youtube videos trying to figure out the right technique.  The main advice we got was “Don’t try too hard.  The harder you try, the harder it is.”  Well, let’s just say that I’m a perfectionist…soooo you can imagine how that went.
Mud: 1, Kirsten: 0.
Once I admitted defeat and let Noel tackle the mud, I moved on to trying to do something productive around the house.  We have this tiny little closet next to our garage where we keep our coats and shoes, but we hate it.  The reason we can’t stand this little guy is because it’s so small, it doesn’t allow the hangers to actually hang correctly in there, so they always end up pushing the door open.  Well as I was picking up coats and putting them away, this little closet got on my last nerve.  So at about 8pm Sunday evening, I decided it was the perfect time to give it a makeover.

I was originally inspired by this image on Pinterest, because let’s face it, I’m far more likely to hang my coat on a hook than take the extra 4 seconds to put it on a hanger.  Plus, how cute right?  I knew I wanted mine to look a little different than this, as I wanted a shelf up top to put hats and mittens, and I needed a place to put shoes.
So I sat there, carefully planned out my idea, then jumped right in, removed the door, took down the too-big shelf, and went to work.
Now, it’s not 100% done – I still want to add a pillow on the bench, which I hope to make today, but other than that, this bad boy is nearly complete.  And the entire project took less than two days.  If I finish the pillow today (that is find the right fabric), I’ll post finished images tomorrow, as well as a breakdown of everything.  But as for now, here is how this little closet is shaping up.
We like it so much, we aren’t even going to put the door back up.  Have you tackled any spur of the moment projects lately?

the explosion in our living room.

I have to apologize – there’s no “Wedding Wednesday” post today.  Why?  Because my life just so happened to explode all over our living room…and after avoiding it for the past couple of days, it is getting desperate for my attention.  Aaah, the joys of moving.

I do have to say though, vacuum bags are a gift from God.  Seriously, go buy them.  Amazing.

However, unpacking them is not so fun.  Especially when you don’t have anywhere to put anything.

Disaster zone…before the living room mess was even in here.

So, I’m fixing that problem.
For those of you painting, I highly recommend using Frog Tape.  It works way better than the blue painters tape because the paint doesn’t seep under it.

Now, I really am not a fan of these wire shelves because let’s face it, they’re ugly.  But right now, I don’t have the time or the energy to custom make something fabulous, so they’ll have to do.

What do you all think of the paint color?  Noel walked in and screeches, “You’re going to make it SOOO dark in here!”  Disagree.  I think it will contrast wonderfully with the white shelves that are going to go on the other wall.  More to come…
Oh, and will my fairy godmother please come and bring me some dark curtains?  These sheers are clearly not cutting it because I am woken up at 6am every morning by this.  Looks like I have another thing to add to my to-do list this week.

Wow, rereading this I sound really crabby…I promise I’m not!  Just a busy bee here!  Have a lovely Wednesday!

a closet catastrophe

I can’t believe it…I only have two – count that – TWO more weeks in Colorado.  How sad is that?!  It’s so bittersweet.  I’m excited to get back and see everyone in Minnesota, but…I absolutely adore Denver and don’t want to leave.  Seeing as I’m moving in two weeks, in between trying to finish up final projects and get ready for finals, I’m doing the thing I detest more than anything: packing and moving.

Somehow, I’ve acquired SO MUCH STUFF, and I’ve even sent suitcases upon suitcases home over the past few months.  Nearly all of my clothes are now back in MN, which brings me to the main reason for this post – our closet.  We are fortunate enough to have a generously sized walk-in closet…but despite that, now that my clothes have been put in there as well as Noels, it literally looks like a bomb went off inside.  I had a picture to share with you, but now it has somehow disappeared (which is probably for the best).  However, this is what it looked like before all of Noel’s clothes were in there, and before any of mine were.  Just imagine this, with clothes literally piled to the ceiling.  It’s awful, I know.

There are two main reasons our closet is such a disaster.  First of all, we both need to do some serious purging.  Nope, not just me, both of us.  I happen to be blessed with a fiance with more clothes than your typical girl.  Add that to mine, and our home is exploding with clothes.

The other reason it’s such a catastrophe is because although our closet is a decent size, there is NO storage in there.  So what is it going to take to get this closet it tip-top shape?  We’ll add two levels of hanging space along the left, and then install several shelving units along the right wall…and hopefully end up with something beautiful like this:
